Distinct microbial communities alter litter decomposition rates in a fertilized coastal plain wetland

چکیده
Human activities have led to increased deposition of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) into soils. Nutrient enrichment soils is known increase plant biomass rates microbial litter decomposition. However, interacting effects hydrologic position associated changes soil moisture can constrain activity lead unexpected nutrient feedbacks on community structure–function relationships. Examining decomposition essential for predicting contributions carbon (C) cycling as atmospheric nutrients persists. This study explored how long-term addition contrasting chemical composition influenced bacterial structure function. We hypothesized that low fertility alters leads higher especially C:N litter, but low-nutrient dry conditions limit high ratio litter. leveraged a fertilization experiment test manipulation (due ditches) affected in nutrient-poor coastal plain wetland. conducted bag characterized litter-associated bulk microbiomes using 16S rRNA sequencing quantified mass losses physicochemical properties. Results revealed distinct communities were involved decomposing more quickly fertilized compared unfertilized under drier conditions, while lower similar between plots. Bacterial part explained rates, status diversity rates. with was wetter plots available nitrate detected, regardless treatment. provides insight composition, decomposition, the potential C loss hydrology interact affect historically ecosystems.

15 صفحه اولLeaf Litter Mixtures Alter Microbial Community Development: Mechanisms for Non-Additive Effects in Litter Decomposition
To what extent microbial community composition can explain variability in ecosystem processes remains an open question in ecology. Microbial decomposer communities can change during litter decomposition due to biotic interactions and shifting substrate availability. Though relative abundance of decomposers may change due to mixing leaf litter, linking these shifts to the non-additive patterns o...
متن کاملAgricultural wetland restorations on the USA Atlantic Coastal Plain achieve diverse native wetland plant communities but differ from natural wetlands
Wetland restoration is globally important for offsetting effects of wetland loss and degradation but is not consistently successful. Vegetation studies provide insight into the effectiveness of restoring wetland ecosystem functions. We compared plant community composition in 47 non-tidal wetlands under different management (natural, restored, and former wetlands that had been converted to cropl...
متن کاملProduction and Decomposition Rates of a Coastal Plain Forest following the Impact of Hurricane Hugo
Recovery of a coastal plain mixed hardwood-pine forest following the impact of Hurricane Hugo in 1989 was monitored for four years, 19911995. Eight 400 m* plots were set in each of two treatment areas-an Unsalvaged and a Salvaged site. Wind-downed trees were kept on the site in the Unsalvaged Site and removed in the Salvaged Site. It was hypothesized that leaving hurricane generated debris in p...
متن کاملAgricultural conservation practices and wetland ecosystem services in the wetland-rich Piedmont-Coastal Plain region
In the eastern U.S. Coastal Plain and Piedmont region, diverse inland wetlands (riverine, depressional, wet flats) have been impacted by or converted to agriculture. Farm Bill conservation practices that restore or enhance wetlands can return their ecological functions and services to the agricultural landscape. We review the extent of regional knowledge regarding the effectiveness of these con...
